I think this is a brilliant piece of kit. It does everything I wanted it to do. It has so far handled all the video files I have thrown at it and the quality on my TV is excellent. Looks as good as watching any DVD - not familiar with Blu-Ray so can't compare.
The box itself is very compact and I like being able to connect any USB device to it so I can easily copy files from my pc and watch them on the TV. For me that is more convenient than having a media player with hard disk as part of it.
Once you connect a USB device it quickly scans all media files and organises them into categories and you can quickly watch your files.
For this price, you can't get better.

This is a superb product. I would highly recommend it.
I bought this because my previous Bush PVR, which was only 18 months old, had started playing up so badly it was no longer usable. I dismantled that one and put the hard drive in my PC! After surveying the reviews for a new PVR I settled on the Humax PVR9150T. The only real downside from the reviews that I had read was that many people complained about fan noise. I have had it for a little over 2 weeks now and it really is a superb bit of kit. It takes a little while to get use to the features on the remote so it is worth taking the time to read through the manual and play with the settings a little to see what they do.
The signal from the twin tuners is excellent. You can record anything on freeview at the push of a button. It copes with a TV series really well and adjusts for time shifting in the programmes very well...mine has only cut one programme short so far and that was only by about 1 minute.
The feature that really impressed me was the timeshifted recording--my old Bush machine didn't have that. Basically, anything you are watching it records silently in the background so, if there's a good film on at 9pm for example, but I don't want to start watching it until say 9.30--provided I have the Humax set on that channel from 9pm, I can come along at 9.30 and just rewind the film back to the beginning at up to 32x speed. Then when I'm playing it back, if the phone rings I can pause it, if I miss some dialogue I can rewind it, if I get to an advert break I can skip over it...it's brilliant and it all works perfectly. I've watched a lot more TV since I bought this!
As for the fan noise, I can't actually hear any on mine. I was a bit concerned at first. Perhaps my fan isn't working but then it doesn't seem to get really hot so maybe it just has a quiet fan? Perhaps this is a problem that Humax have fixed?
This is a superb product. I would highly recommend it.

Media Streamer Supreme,Western Digital Live 1080p Internet Media Streamer Television
Western Digital's newest addition to its growing lineup of media players, the WD TV Live, essentially picks up where its older sibling (the great WD TV) left off. With the newly added networking capabilities via a built-in Ethernet port or USB Wi-Fi adapter (sold separately), the WD TV Live has taken Western Digital's little black box to the next level. Be it photos, music, video (encoded with just about any codec under the sun), or the newly added access to YouTube, Flickr, Pandora, and Live365, the WD TV Live can handle just about any kind of media thrown its way. Overall, it is a highly capable, easy to use, and relatively affordable all-around high definition media player.

A highly recommended blu-ray player
This is a quality Blu-ray player, as you would expect for the price. The player is very easy to setup, just follow the on screen instructions. Further customisation can be found in the setup menu. It's a very slim machine, no where near as bulky as cheaper models. It's also very sleak, the whole front panel drops down when you press eject.
The picture quality is top notch. I tried some regular DVDs in it first to see the upgrade quality, very impressed. Sound and picture are visibly upgraded and breathe new life into some well-watched films.
Blu-ray films are amazingly good. The sound alone is worth the price (very detailed), the picture is, as you would expect, excellent. Along with the films you also get a ton of new features that can be accessed at any time.
A highly recommended blu-ray player that will stand the test of time I'm sure.

Great product at a good price,
Far from being a technophobe I must admit to leaving the purchase of a Blu Ray player a bit late in life. I've been enjoying HD tv for years now so finally bit the bullet and bought a Blu Ray player.
My dilemma was where to start. Like mobile phones and contracts, it's a bit of a minefield out there so apart from the usual "googling" I had a browse on Amazon.
What I like about the site is as you browse you get recommendations for other similar products so therefore narrows your choices down a bit for you. I tried not to get too swayed by all the HD & HDMI jargon, just simply a player that was suitable to my TV's resolution of 1086. I learned that there was no point buying an all singing, all dancing player for £500+ if the resolution on my TV wasn't that of the player. This is what I like about independent reviews and I would say the same in that this product serves my TV very well.
I chose Samsung as my TV is Samsung and know that the controllers are compatible with each other.
The player is very easy to set up & took me all of 5 minutes. As I had no Blu Ray dvd's I tried out a few standard ones and was pleased to see that the playback quality is better than that of a standard dvd. It did mention this in the write up and has proved to be correct.
However, on seeing Blu Ray playback I was very impressed! The clarity and sharpness is perfect. Sound is another issue and this will depend on your set up but my 2.0 BOSE speakers come into their own. Great cinema quality!!
In summary, if this is your first purchase and want a basic player for a good price then go for it. I highly recommend!!

| Toshiba RD-XV59DT DVD & VHS Player with Freeview |
| DVD player with 250 GB hard disk drive for versatile recording up to 284 hours I bought this DVD / Video / HDD recording combo because, amongst other things, I wanted to be able easily to copy and archive some old video material to digital format, and I have didn't have a (digital) DVD recorder. So far it has done this job superbly. I haven't used anything like all of its features and functions yet, as it is used in combination with a twin (digital) tuner PVR. It's being used with an analogue TV, and it's worth pointing out to potential purchasers without a digital TV that this machine has only one digital tuner - thus without having the PVR (or a digital set top box) as well, it wouldn't be possible to view one channel whilst recording another. Also worth mentioning is I contacted Toshiba's customer support, because I couldn't intially see how to pause and record live TV, and they quickly emailed me pointing me to the relevant section of the comprehensive manual that describes how to do this. One piece of caution though - because this machine has so many functions, it may not be the most suitable for elderly relatives who are struggling to get to grips with new technology... |
